they used filters as an overlay over the camera to achieve the look of colour the colour of the filter were the primary red green and blue.

technicolour 

the audience were amazed by use of technicolour at least until it became old

how colour used to indicate the following

mood/ colour can be shown to show mood by using specific lighting and colour at a specific point to indicate a specific feeling within the audience such as red to indicate danger or warmth depending on the degree of the colour 

this technique is used in pretty much every film since colour was introduced

what were the barriers to the adoption of colour film on a wide scale? how was this resolved?

the technology became cheaper which was the main problem before, the money 

all of the companies involved were fighting each others patents on the technology 

character and narrative

colour in character can be used to show many things such as difference between different characters such as one wearing blue and one wearing red indicating they are different or for example Mario and Luigi green being the opposite of red on the colour board.

narratively colour can be used to show different locations or the time of day such as when the sun is out and everything is lit its day and the story has progressed to morning  showing that time and story beats have passed
