main question.
what's the general view on mockumentaries as a genre

this main question will help me understand what kind of mockumentary stigma is already preestablished within society, and what kind of feedback I should expect from people who watch mine.

I will find out the answer to this question by searching out reviews by all types of different people and find the most common opinion of my chosen genre

the result from watching and analysing these reviews is that I now have a broader view on what the common view on mockumentaries are and what aspects people like that I can include in my own work. one aspect is that the reviewers always commented on the characters of each film they reviewed so I can take that information and focus majorly on character development and making them feel real like this is spinal tap for example which people cite as one of the best in its genre. asking that question was pivotal finding this useful information. after this research i found a link between mockumentaries box office returns and if the movie had good and properly thought out characters which are supposed to represent people within the documentary type the film is mocking, for example borat did extremely well box office wise and the reason is because borat as a character within his mockumentary as a well defined character that feels real within the parody narrative made to spoof reality.

introduction

the topic i chose to study was the wide and vast topic of a film genre known as mockumentary, i chose this genre specifically because i relates to my favourite fmp idea which is a mockumentary based on ghost hunters.

the reason why i chose this topic is because I've always had a passion for the supernatural while also having a humour about it too so making a comedic mockumentary making fun of some of the conventions of these ghost hunting's shows would be really fun and expand my knowledge of different film genres as well. another personal reason i chose this topic is that one of my favourite films is a mockumentary so being able to make and research for my own is something i couldn't pass up, the film being what we do in the shadows a mockumentary about modern live vampires.

the research methods to prepare for the chosen topic was mostly secondary as i used a lot of YouTube videos such as clips from mockumentaries, music i was inspired by and reviewers. i also did quantative research by gathering opinions from people i know and put them in a poll for results to analyse. before doing this research i made a mind map for planning the research before i did it which later helped me organise.

in conclusion the results from doing this research resulted in a greater understanding of the genre of mockumentaries and the aspects i should put in mine to make it a success both in the look and the structure, all thanks to the research I've done on this page.

METHODOLOGY

. SECONDARY RESEARCH

the strengths for secondary are numerous, so numerous in fact i could not list them all. but one of the most useful ways is the internet which of course has the accumulative knowledge of practically everybody ever you can imagine how useful a tool like that can be for research

the negatives are not so numerous the main one being that people don't think its as valid as primary which has its uses but i personally don't think it can be used as well as secondary can in terms of research.

. QUANTATIVE RESEARCH

the strength of this type of research is that you get so much in terms of results, there is a reason its called quantative research as its main purpose is to get quantity of info that you want.

negative is kind of obvious, it focuses on quantity over quality which of course means the research will not be as much of quality as other research methods.

. MIND MAP

the main strength of using mind maps is that its easy to compile and keep track of relevant information or plans

the main negative is that it cannot be as useful as other ways of keeping track or planning research such as doing a research table instead.

. SURVEY

the strengths of using surveys is that you get unfiltered opinions directly from the source and makes you look more professional too.

the weakness is that the people you ask may not share valid or good information.

the questions i wanted to answer for this topic were ones that relate mostly to the success of a mockumentary and to do that i mostly asked and looked at questions relating to successful examples of the genre such as ghost adventures or what we do in the shadows. the data from these questions were mostly qualitive as you can see from my research work above.

FINDINGS

the most important thing i found from doing this research subject is that i enjoy making my questions relvent to my project and using the research to answer them, its pretty enjoyable and I've learnt a lot about the genre i was researching in the process like how good consistent characters make or break a good mockumentary. all of the findings from my research lay all over this page.

CONCLUSION

in conclusion i believe that the research i have done throughout this page will tribute greatly to any further development of my mockumentary idea which of course was the goal of this work all along so i am proud to say that i have achieved that while developing my original idea even more than i started out with thanks mostly to my research about the conventions and why some audiences like the genre to begin with, which will be useful in fleshing out my project in the future when i decide to make it.

the limitations of my research methods meant that i couldn't get first hand information such as interviewing someone with knowledge i do not have yet such as zac bagans or taika waititi, but the research i have performed is already sufficient enough i think even if it would have been cool to interview those legends who relate to my subject its not like it was necessary to do so.

before doing this research i didn't realise just how many types of mockumentaries there are, for example what we do in the shadows is comedic in almost everyway using its documentary format for comedy and gags whereas another mockumentary district 9 takes the same sort of format but takes the entire subject seriously and tries to present its narrative as real as possible.

thanks to the reviews i researched i learnt that people usually enjoy mockumentaries with good and well thought out characters which eventually inspired me to have some ideas about what my character ghost hunters could be which i am now developing, this point will be crucial to get right as i found out from my research.

in double conclusion this research will come in handy when i actually make mockumentaries in the future which i will definitely do since its one of my favourite genres and i really wanna give it a try with my own unique twist and thanks to this research page i think ill be able to make a good one if it just remember all the information i found out by researching various forms of the topic. with this all said and done i am looking forward to proving i can also make a great mockumentary that can stand up there with the popular ones in terms of parody and comedy, look forward to it because i will make sure to surpass my inspirations i used for this research.
