the portrait/The Portrait - silent horror film 1915 - YouTube
this classic film is impressive for its time although it uses no different shots over than wide it manages to tell an interesting story through actors and props alone one such prop is the centre piece the portrait. in a modern film dialogue would be used to explain its supernatural aspect but since this has none its shown through subtle actions at first such as the portrait slightly moving before fully coming out the painting at the end, again using his body
the haunted house/Buster Keaton - The Haunted House (1921) Silent film - YouTube
this one is closer to modern film it has many cuts and fades which improves story telling and makes it more interesting, there is also much more of a story this time with multiple characters and a lot more sets used compared to other classic films before its time there really is a story here and a ton of physical gags since there was no audio to make jokes in fact it relies heavily on movement to show expressions, since words used through the title cards are usually used for plot alone and not for character development such as when the things are stolen in this film it says so on the screen in words because of course audiences back then probably needed more context of what's going one
